ABSTRACT

In an era marked by rapid environmental change and increasing challenges to global sustainability, the integration of indigenous wisdom into modern education has emerged as a critical strategy for cultivating environmental stewardship. This paper examines Green Knowledge Systems, a framework that bridges traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with contemporary sustainability education, to foster a holistic understanding of nature and to equip future generations with the skills needed for resilient environmental management. Drawing upon interdisciplinary research from environmental science, anthropology, education, and sustainability studies, the analysis explores the theoretical foundations of Indigenous knowledge, the epistemological challenges of merging diverse knowledge systems, and the practical methodologies for integrating Indigenous wisdom into modern curricula. The paper further presents illustrative case studies from various cultural contexts and discusses policy implications, proposing a collaborative model for curriculum development that honours indigenous perspectives. Finally, this study contends that embracing Green Knowledge Systems can enrich academic discourse and drive transformative change, leading to educational environments that are both scientifically robust and culturally inclusive.
